Welcome
to the Garden Cottage on Hydra Island Greece
From
the street you enter the upper terrace of the large, walled and very
private garden with both orange, lemon and olive trees.
The kitchen and shower room are to one side of the garden with the main
rooms of the house on the other.
The shower room is new and functional
and scrupulously clean.
The kitchen is very cosy and the
working, traditional, wood burning fireplace makes this room the hub of
the house during winter months. The kitchen is equipped with a full size
electrical oven, large fridge/freezer, washing machine and lots of pots
and pans.
 Across
the upper terrace from the kitchen,
you enter the main living room. This is a large airy room with lots of
windows, all with shutters that can be used to keep the sun out of the
room as necessary. Stairs in the corner of the living room lead down to
the lower floor bedrooms.
The living room has a TV with integral
video player for your entertainment, there are a few children's tapes
available. A radio/CD player is available.
At
the back of the living room there is a single bedroom
with air-conditioning. This is a good sized room with a huge wardrobe, that
doubles as a study when we are using the house.
There is a telephone and ISDN point
in this room and you are welcome to use the phone for incoming and local
calls only. For those requiring internet access from a local provider,
we recommend that you obtain a 'Smile 'n' Web' pay as you go internet
card from the local OTE office in the town.
The lower floor has a double bedroom to one
side of the inner hall at the bottom of the
stairs and a single bedroom to the other side.
There
is an exit door to the garden
so that you can reach the toilet/shower across the garden without the
necessity of having to go up stairs.
All of the bedrooms are large enough to
be able to put the cot up in any of them, without being cramped.
Fans, heaters, linen, towels and blankets
are all supplied but we would appreciate if you would bring your own beach
towels.
The bedrooms on the lower floors
are much cooler than the upper floor but even so, we recommend putting
the air-conditioning unit on in the upper bedroom with the windows and
doors shut so that the cool air flows down, if you want it even cooler
and don't want to use fans.
The
lower part of the garden is planted with orange, lemon and olive trees. You are
welcome to help yourself to the fruit if it's in season. In the evenings the air
is gently perfumed with scented shrubs that grow up the walls.
The upper terrace is
split into two areas. The one outside the kitchen is convenient as a summer
dining area and the long terrace that overlooks
the main garden, is a great place for BBQ's on the large set that you
are welcome to use (please note that you will need to buy charcoal for
it though).
A range of good quality
garden furniture is at your disposal. Plenty of tables, director's chairs
and sturdy sun umbrellas are all to be found in the store room to the
side of the garden. The Hydra style outdoor sofa
with soft pillows is a place for a relaxing siesta in the afternoon.
The
house is conveniently situated near the grocery stores in Kamini on the
road to Kamini Harbour and Kastello beach.
Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet
in a countryside atmosphere that can't be noticed if you're staying in the port.
In nearby gardens there are hens and a
few donkeys.
Next door there is the work room of the
lady who makes the beeswax candles for all the churches and chapels on the
island. If she's in, you will be welcome to watch her work.
